How to break free from a Revenue Rut in your Coaching Business
Why Does It Feel So Hard to Break Free from a Revenue Rut?
If you’ve ever felt stuck in your coaching business, unable to create consistent income, you’re not alone. Many coaches find themselves in this position—doing all the "right" things yet not seeing results.
In Episode 43 of Build Your Coaching Business Around the 9 to 5, I dive deep into why this happens and what you can do about it. This isn't just about the quick fixes that might look good on the surface. It's about addressing the deeper misalignments in your business so you can build momentum that lasts.
Stuck in the Plateau
For many coaches, the journey starts with excitement. You’ve put yourself out there, started posting regularly, and maybe even secured a client or two. But now, months have passed, and you’re still wondering why you’re not making the money you want.
Maybe you’ve had zero months more often than you’d like to admit, or your income is wildly inconsistent. One month feels promising, and the next feels like a desert. Even if you've achieved some wins, the fear of, “What if this all dries up?” might still be lingering.
What Keeps Coaches Stuck?
Here’s the hard truth: posting and hoping isn’t enough.
When I work with clients, one of the first things I notice is that they’re often unclear about their offer. If you don’t know who your offer is for or the results you help them achieve, how can you expect someone else to know?
I also see coaches who aren’t convicted in their pricing. And here’s the kicker—if you’re not confident about what you’re charging, your potential clients won’t be either.
In the podcast, I explain it like this: “If you don’t have an offer to sell, how can anybody give you money? What are they paying you for? If you’re wobbly about your offers, why would they pay you for something that you’re not convicted about?”
The truth is, your energy matters just as much as your strategy. When you show up from a place of uncertainty, potential clients pick up on it.
Coaching Quick Fixes That Don't Work
It’s tempting to look for quick fixes. Maybe you’ve been guilty of this:
- Constantly tweaking your offer or changing niches.
- Running sales or promotions and hoping something sticks.
- Posting content but avoiding direct conversations about your offer.
But here’s the thing: this is like going on 50 first dates and wondering why no one’s proposing. You’re not giving yourself or your offer a chance to build the momentum it needs to thrive.
The Real Solution: Aligning Strategy and Energy
To get out of a revenue rut, you need to go back to the fundamentals. That’s where the transformation happens.
- Clarity on Your Offer
Your offer is the foundation of your business. This means knowing:- Exactly who your offer is for.
- The results you help clients achieve.
- The process they’ll go through to get there.
When you’re clear on these, your clients can self-select and say, “Yes, that’s for me!” without hesitation.
-
Confidence in Your Pricing
Pricing is more than a number. It’s about embodying the value of your offer. As I explain in the episode, “The cost is the cost because it is an investment. It represents the client’s commitment to their goals, dreams, and transformation.” -
A Sustainable Strategy
This isn’t just about showing up randomly. A solid marketing and sales strategy aligns with your offer and pricing, giving you the tools to confidently communicate your value.
When you have all three in place—offer, pricing, and strategy—you can finally stop “posting and hoping” and start expecting results.
The Impact of Alignment
One of the most powerful concepts I share with my clients is alignment. Alignment happens when what you’re doing, saying, believing, and taking action on are all in sync. Without this, you’re pushing uphill. With it, momentum flows naturally.
In Episode 43, I shared a metaphor about learning to drive. At first, everything feels overwhelming. You’re sweating, gripping the wheel, and just trying to survive the lesson. But over time, you master the basics, and before you know it, you’re cruising on the open road.
The same applies to your coaching business. It starts with learning the fundamentals, and as you practice and refine, everything begins to click.
