How to get Return on Investment as a Life Coach Through Networking

Feb 06, 2025

I’m sharing insights on how to get the most out of networking events as a life coach, especially if you’ve been relying on online spaces and avoiding face-to-face opportunities. Networking events can feel daunting, but when approached with the right intention, they offer immense value beyond just client generation—they can reshape your self-concept and open doors you didn’t expect. Whether you’re actively attending or considering them for the first time, this blog will help you navigate the experience and reframe your approach to networking.

The Fear and Hesitation Around Networking Events

Many life coaches hesitate when it comes to networking events, often feeling overwhelmed by the idea of meeting people face-to-face. If you’ve primarily built your presence online, I understand how daunting it can be to step outside of that comfort zone.

I recently attended a networking event—my first in nearly two years. Although I had plenty of experience with networking during my corporate career, showing up as a life coach was different. However, it was a refreshing reminder of how beneficial these events can be when approached with the right mindset.

Shifting the Intention: From ROI to ROE (Return on Energy)

One key realization I had during this event was the importance of shifting my focus from a return on investment (ROI) to a return on energy (ROE). When I approached the event with this mindset, I felt more present and open to genuine connections. The outcome? Referrals, a potential speaking gig, and renewed excitement—none of which I would have experienced had I been fixated on immediate client generation. Many of us go into networking events expecting immediate outcomes, like signing new clients or closing deals. But what if you approached these events with the intention of gaining energy, connection, and opportunities instead?

Networking is not just about financial outcomes. It’s about expanding your horizons, sparking inspiration, and connecting with people who may open doors in unexpected ways. The energy you receive can fuel your self-concept and strengthen how you show up in your business.

What Networking Did for Me

Attending this recent event reminded me of the beauty of in-person connection. My business is global, and most of my marketing happens online. But being physically present, sharing conversations, and engaging face-to-face was a powerful experience.

I went without expectations, simply hoping to connect. By the end, I had potential referrals, a possible speaking gig, and a renewed sense of excitement. This is what happens when you allow yourself to be open to opportunities without attachment to specific outcomes.

The Power of Self-Concept at Networking Events

When you attend a networking event, you have a clean slate. No one there has preconceived notions about you. This is an opportunity to show up as the life coach and CEO you’re becoming.

I didn’t prepare a formal elevator pitch because I knew who I was and what I stood for. That confidence allowed me to introduce myself naturally, share examples, and own my authority. The practice of speaking about your business off the cuff is invaluable. It reinforces your self-concept and builds your confidence for future interactions.

Key Networking Tips for Life Coaches

  1. Shift Your Focus to ROE: Rather than obsessing over making sales or gaining clients, focus on how the event energizes and expands you.

  2. Be Clear on Your Identity: Know who you are, what you do, and who you help. This clarity will guide your conversations.

  3. Practice Active Listening: Effective networking is not about constantly talking about yourself. Instead, listen, ask questions, and show genuine interest in others.

  4. Lean Into Your Self-Concept: Use the event as a practice ground for embodying the life coach, CEO, or business owner you aspire to be.

The Unexpected Benefits of Networking Events

One of the surprising things I noticed was how little I had to talk about my specific coaching offers or ideal clients. Instead, I focused on engaging in meaningful conversations. People remember how you make them feel, not just what you say.

If you want to enhance your networking skills, I highly recommend reading How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. It’s a classic guide to building connections, even if you consider yourself an introvert.

Final Thoughts

Networking events may not be your primary client-generating activity, but they can be a powerful tool for growth. When you show up with the right intentions, they offer a chance to expand your energy, build your self-concept, and create new opportunities.

So, the next time an invitation to a networking event comes your way, even if you feel nervous, I encourage you to lean into the opportunity. Show up in your power, chin up, shoulders back, and be the life coach you are becoming. You never know what magic might unfold.

Let me know in the comments if this resonated with you or if you’ve had transformative experiences at networking events. I’d love to hear your stories!
